In the USA, there are several welding standards issued by different organisations. Some of the most important are

AWS D1.1: Structural Welding Code – Steel
AWS D1.2: Structural Welding Code – Aluminium
AWS D1.3: Welding Standards for Structural Steel – Sheet Steel
AWS D1.6: Welding Standards for Structural Steel – Stainless Steel

These standards contain requirements for materials, procedures, welder qualifications and welding tests for various designs and materials.

Other standards organisations such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Petroleum Institute (API) also have their own welding standards.
